I always try to give when the fandom joins together for a cause.

It's one the best parts of being a part of this fandom...having enough power to give and make a difference.

It finally hit home.

I live in Central Texas and the fires that have destroyed Bastrop, Steiner Ranch, areas of Leander and Pflugerville have changed affected people I know and care about.
Fellow teachers evacuated their homes and left their memories behind.
Some were lucky and have homes to get back to and others are without.

7,213,113 acres burned in the U.S. in 2011...3,538,852 have been in Texas.

Wildfires have devastated central Texas, burning 3.6 million acres, an area that's roughly the size of Connecticut. That makes it one of the largest in recorded history in North America.

Six of the 10 worst wildfires in Texas history have occurred in 2011.
"According to the latest estimates released by officials in Bastrop County, the estimated number of burned structures has risen to 1,400, all homes, have been destroyed by the wildfire that continues to burn largely uncontained." (FOX7 Austin)

I tweeted out to the masses and got back several recommendations (all of which I will list at the end of this post) but the one I want you all to saddle up with is Ride of My Life by SuddenlySandi.

Ride of My Life by SuddenlySandi

"Bella and Edward come from two totally different worlds. Can they find a way to work it out, or will Edward's determination to win cost him his life?"

Really good story. He's a rodeo champ. She's a pop singer. Both of them love their jobs but then they fall in love with each other.

The story arc here is very detailed and believeable as far as the world of rodeo that Edward lives in and I found myself wanting to bust out my Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley playlists.

Edward is rough around the edges and a very strong character. He has flaws and some issues with Bella's friends and their lifestyle choices but it's handled in a very realistic and believable way.

Bella has some great lines in this one in her journey to either being with Edward or choosing to keep her life.
It's says it's 9 chapters but it's really 27. It was a repost and it's complete.
And it shouldn't be rated T because it's a definite M.

My Lost Youth by Edward A. Masen

"The beginnings of a most unusual family, as told by Edward Masen."

I recently found My Lost Youth and devoured the 22 posted chapters as fast as I could. This is an unusual fic pick for me as I usually read AH fics but this telling of how Edward became a vampire and how he became Carlisle's friend, brother, and son is an incredible read. There was a poll on one of the livejournal communities I am a member of asking "Who is Edward's best friend?"
I immediately thought-- Carlisle.
My Lost Youth makes that thought make sense to me.

"There is a certain euphemism, often attributed to the Chinese, that says, "May you live in interesting times."
I wasn't aware of it until just after my seventeenth birthday, but I grew up in interesting times. Even the war I wanted to go fight in, the one that had stretched all over the globe, unprecedented in its scale, hadn't opened my eyes to just how extraordinary my times were.
What did it, what shoved me into that realization, was when my father died of fever without so much as a day's warning. After it happened, I remember looking around my once-secure world with an unwelcome new perspective, realizing that none of us would ever forget 1918.
Morgues were overflowing with victims of the pandemic. Railroads were paralyzed by all the quarantines springing up all over the country. There was no school. Whole towns were falling into abandoned silence. Children chanted morbid little rhymes as they played:
Well I had a little bird
and it's name was Enza
I opened a window
and in-flu-enza
That was the year Spanish Influenza ravaged the country. By the time it was done with us, more than a half million had died, and unlike other plagues that seemed to cull only the weak, it also targeted the youngest and strongest. It stole us quickly, sometimes within hours of the first symptoms appearing. That's how it claimed my father in the summer, during its first rapid wave.
My mother and I fell ill within the same week that winter, just after Armistice Day, and the timing of it was like the twist of a knife in an old wound. Everyone was finally ready to put the flu behind them, to get on with their lives. We thought it was over." (My Lost Youth, Chapter 4: Ashes, Ashes)

I think in times where I feel myself disconnecting from this fandom because all I see or hear is stuff that actually has nothing to do with this fandom reading some canon fics rekindles my love of the characters. One would think I would pick up the source materials but alas I haven't done that in a while...maybe one day...again.

I rarely find stories that I feel could be canon or at least I want them to be canon. In the past I had found the stories of giselle-lx were as close to canon that I had found, she wrote Ithaca is Gorges.
Ithaca is my favorite canon piece to date.

If you haven't read any of giselle-lx's work here are my suggested readings:

Ithaca is Gorges: "New Moon from Carlisle's and Edward's POV: After the Cullens leave Bella and move to Ithaca, NY, Carlisle fights to keep his family together as Edward's pain threatens to tear them apart."

Secondhand Rose: "Emmett reflects on what it means to spend eternity loving a woman burdened by her past." So good it makes me cry to think about it...

The Family Cullen: "It's the Cullens' first Christmas in Forks, and Carlisle surprises his family with the gift of some unique jewelry. Later, he and Edward have a quiet conversation about what the future holds."

Da Capo: "When Edward returns from his rebellious years, he finds everything has changed—including him. This is the story of Edward's "Da Capo". Again, it's kick you in the pants good.

I am a Rose fan.
My favorite story about Rosalie's past is an unfinished story but still a great read--

Such Fruits as These by Grendelsmother
"Rosalie Hale was a beautiful young woman on the verge of marriage when her life was taken from her in an act of horrific violence. Rescued by the Cullens, can she come to terms with the end of her human life? Can she save other women from the same fate?"

The amazing fic that is the Inside Man got me thinking about letters...

I haven't written a letter to anyone in a long time.

I used to have several pen-pals when I was in middle school.

We wrote about boy-bands and fake boyfriends we didn't have that suspiciously were just like the members of various boy-bands.

But as an adult(-ish) person I haven't written a letter to anyone in a very long time.

I email people all the time but that isn't the same...there's something about getting a letter in the mail that is very exciting.

Fic of the Week: Inside Man

"With his parole fast approaching, inmate Edward Masen is looking for a friend. College student Bella Swan stumbles across his profile on a prison pen-pal website. Their friendship is formed over written words, but will it last once he rejoins her world?"

Hold on tight because I am so excited about this story that I may come through your screen and force you to read it...like by force...perhaps, I'll withhold Robporn from you...yes, I am THAT serious!

I know you'll thank me.

Inside Man is a story of people getting to know each other in unusual circumstances and seeing if what we share via paper or even on-line can hold up to what we share in our real lives. Edward is about to be paroled (maybe) and he wants to reach out to someone on the outside to re-acclimate to talking to "normal people".

Bella is in college and an assignment presents itself and she decides to take a chance on getting to know a stranger. The letters between the two are amazing and draw you in so much that you find yourself waiting for the next one with as much anticipation as the characters.

If read on ff.net the letters represent a chapter.

If read on ooza's blog, Garden of Sin, then you can see the progression of the story via the actual letters between the two characters.

Inside Man takes the time to really build the connection between two people who know that what they are experiencing via these letters may not translate to the real world.

The banner's tagline: "p.s. Do you think someday we could be real friends?" really hits at the heart of this story.

It hit me hard.

Fic of the Week: The Decision

"Edward made a decision after that second biology lesson. Two years later that decision is challenged."

Remember when you first read the Twilight Saga ( I hate the word saga, btw, sadly in this case it is apropos) and you swooned over Edward's old-fashioned mannerisms and lack of experience in love?

For me, the best parts of canon Edward have always been his incredible love for Bella and his old world charm.

The Decision has THAT Edward.

This is a very short novella type story.

It has 5 chapters posted and will have a few more to be complete.

The story picks up after Edward leaves Forks to go to Alaska in order to save Bella from his bloodlust.

He never comes back to Forks.

While their meeting was very short, that doesn't mean that they have forgotten each other.

I can't tell you too much about the storyline without giving it away and to be honest the last chapter totally changed the game on the storyline anyway...now is a good time to jump in to see how it ends.

I only have one rec this week because I spent the last week reading The Hunger Games series.

I didn't think I would like these books but as sure as Rob likes to look like a hobo...I became obsessed.

I cried like a baby at the end of Mockingjay.

Fic of the Week: Requiem of Insanity

"Abused and lonely Edward meets shy and mysterious Bella when they are seven. Secrets and tragedy invade their lives, but still their love endures. Can these two tortured souls find happiness in a mad world of vampires and werewolves."

About a year ago I introduced you to the Why Not? official image for angst stories, "the chest hurty band-aid".

Requiem for Insanity is a full 4 1/2 chest hurties.

Requiem is an incredible story that mixes AU and AH genres in a way I haven't seen before while still carrying the themes that endear us to the Twilight characters.

Edward is a young boy in the foster system when we meet him and his life is far from safe and sound. The author does the difficult job of sharing his experiences in a way that while difficult to read, is still very gentle and truthful. I cry pretty easy but this one was hard to stop. You want so badly to save this little boy and you are in awe at how he not only survives but finds ways to thrive.

We get to know Edward as boy and then as a teen, his story changing time frames every chapter.

"Loyalty."

"It's how I thought of my relationship with Jake. Not that we weren't friends, good friends, even best friends at least in my case, but I doubted I would be here on this cliff contemplating making a dangerous jump with him if it were anyone else but Jake.

"It had been six months."

"Six months…six months since the Cullens left me. It felt like yesterday or like it never happened. The odd sensation of having lived a life that didn't feel like my life, like I had watched it unfold through someone else's eyes was always with me. Every detail of it fresh, yet dreamlike, the recollections of a life that I was never really meant to have. I closed my eyes as the sun broke from the clouds relishing it's warmth against my face." (Prologue)

Edward meets the Cullens one night as he hides in the forest and his world, and theirs, will never be the same...

"Every night for two weeks Edward followed the path along the river looking for the princesses, hopeful that they would want to see him again, that he'd made an impression on them. He would stay in the woods later and later peering into the darkness and when they didn't materialize he began venturing off the trail always being careful to keep the river in sight."

"He didn't talk to anyone else about them, not even Jake who was his best friend most of the time. He just wasn't sure that anyone would believe him and he didn't want to give anyone another reason to think he was a weird little kid. Besides, even if they did believe him, he liked the idea that it was only he that knew about them. No one else on the reservation talked about seeing beautiful ladies that wandered around the woods at night so he guessed he was the only one that had ever seen them."

Requiem's Carlisle is fascinating. I am so impressed by the author's interpretation and voice she has given her Carlilse. His words and POV's are some of my favorite parts of this developing story.

If you are looking for an incredibly unique and deeply emotional story, give Requiem for Insanity a try.

It's a work in progress and has 13 chapters posted at both FF.net and Twilighted.

Shiver me vampies!

I, Ang, am doing an Edward post.

I know. I know. It seems like that part of me was dead and gone and already smelling up the joint...

I even cut the blog name in half when I dropped the "Twilight, RPattz, and Me"!

I often complain about Twilight these days and in all honesty I don't view the franchise like I used to, however, that doesn't mean I am a Twi-hater.

That would be impossible.

Fic Pick of the Week: The Selkie Man

I am also sorta scared of it...

The Selkie Man by DarkBlueBella

"AU. A summer studying Scottish folktales leads to Bella Swan meeting a stranger unlike anyone she has ever met. Can she let herself believe that myth and legend might also be reality?"

The Selkie Man is a mystery, it's a supernatural mystery, it's a love story supernatural mystery...and it's not about vampires.

Which is what I love about this story the most!

Based in Scotland, present time and in the past, our favorite characters have interwoven stories that may all meet up in "who" and "what" the Selkies are.

The story begins in the past and tells us about a wedding that never was~

"Isobel Eunson stood in her wedding dress with flowers in her hair, waiting for her groom to arrive home so the wedding could begin. She stood at the window and watched the sea rolling back and forth. She ignored the quiet, worried whisperings of her aunts and neighbors and paid no attention to the crying of her mother. She stood at the window and waited. Even when the men returned from the boat, walking from the beach to the house with slumped shoulders and dread in their footsteps, she stood and waited."

Bella comes to Scotland to write her thesis and moves into a small cottage in a small village, this is where the true story begins~
"Bella blinked, unsure if she was imagining the man standing in the garden staring back at her. He was unmoving, statue like. He was not threatening looking, but it was impossible to tell what his intentions were. There was no large machete raised over his head in a battle stance or some other clear signal he was about to do her some harm. His body was lean and muscular. Every part of him seemed finely sculpted. The moonlight bathed him in an eerie glow, and his skin could have been any colour in the half darkness. Bella felt her fear dissipate as she watched him. There seemed to be no danger radiating from him, but rather peacefulness and contemplation. What could this man, naked in her garden, want?"

The Selkie Man is a work in progress and the author has updated 12 chapters.
I am enthralled with it.

One-Shot Rec of the Week

Diary of a Dead Man by ineedyoursway
"Exploratory surgery into the soul of a darker Edward Cullen. Darkward contest submission."

I went through a Darkward phase about a year or so ago, but I haven't really read any Darkward's in a while. Whilst fic diving on some of my favorite authors pages I found this little reviewed contest submission by ineedyoursway. She is the author of Fault and Young Pilgrims. This one-shot tells the tale of a very dark Edward with devious blood lust.

The beginning paragraph sets this one up for you~

"My son handed me a book the day of my eighty-third birthday. He flew out from his home in San Francisco, California, all the way to Chicago. I still lived in his childhood home, and my childhood city. My life was long and well-lived. I had a family, a lover, a husband. Overall, it was uneventful. But there was this one mystery. This one facet of my life that is still unsolved. I thought this book was his attempt to clarify his thinking, to explain to me why he did the things he did. To explain the things he never said. The book was a diary. Edward Cullen's diary."

Love In Idleness by twanza

"Bella Swan meets the perfect boy during her junior year, but when she finds out he's a freshman, and an evil mastermind, all hell breaks lose. "

"Loves difficulty, magic, dreams. Sound familiar? It's all been done before. William Shakespeare has graciously agreed to let me smoosh some Twilight into his play (or vice versa). Consider it Shakesfic, or A Midsummer Twilight's Dream."

I was in honors and AP English classes in high school and the only thing I remember is loving A Midsummers Night Dream my freshman year. Love in Idleness has wrapped some magic and faeries into it's words and it's making me very happy. The author, twanza, is a great story teller. She wrote another of my favorites, Neverending Math Equation. Perhaps you read Pressed For Time? You get my point...she tells a good story.

Love in Idleness centers on the innocence of a high school crush with a not so innocent boy. Although, Edward's innocence is debatable because for what he lacks in the areas of romance and kissing skills he more than makes up for in the areas of breaking and entering and high-level hacking skills. Bella is a romantic. She is a girl full of fanciful ideas and beautiful dreams. She has no idea how to handle Edward but he definitely has plans on how to handle this blooming love.

Fan Fic Discussion: What story do you go back and read?

I recently re-read The Blessing and the Curse by The Black Arrow for the third time and I began to wonder why I keep going back to this story? I have a few stories I continually go back to and read, either in their entirety or in certain spots. I am sure we all do.

Today is the first in a series of these favorites and the reasons why I keep coming back.

Summary:

"By pretending she is falling for Edward, Bella is fulfilling Esme's dying wish. But sexy, possessive Edward can read her mind. Will she ever get into his? Can Bella forget the pain of her teenage years, and can she resist his relentless seduction?"

TB&TC is gripping and beautiful. You want to hate, to fear, and to love "Curseward". You want to protect, to push, and to be Bella. The story wraps you in the hell and the heaven of having a soul-mate unlike any other...

"Throughout time, as long as humans have loved, they have believed in soul mates. One person out there, tied to them, the missing piece of their soul. What else could explain that feeling of incompletion, the need to search, to scour the globe until the puzzle piece is found? Everyone from royalty to peasants has searched, has looked into the eyes of another, wondering, is it you? Have I found you? But fate does not intend an easy path for all. Sometimes, death interferes. Sometimes the world conspires to keep soul mates apart."

"But sometimes, the bitterest pill to take is the soul mate that has been there all of your life. The soul mate who wants to consume you, to own you, to drink your strength. The soul mate that is tied to you, and you are shackled to them. Fate dealt a cruel card to Bella Swan. This was one instance where it may have been better if the souls had never found each other, but, as always, they had been dragged together like black magnets. On one side of the coin, it was a blessing, because Bella had her soul mate by her side since the moment she first opened her eyes on this world.

But on the flipside, the blessing was her curse: her wicked soul mate could hear her thoughts, read her like a book and use what he wished. It took her most of her life to realize she was being conquered, and years to escape his tyranny."

Edward is tortured in his love for Bella and can't see anyone but her. Bella is fighting this, as she has her whole life, with every shred of her being. When a family tragedy brings them back together the pull to one another consumes them.

The Black Arrow creates a fantasy world out of the Cullen home and it is so easy to get wrapped up in the warmth and grandeur of it all. Esme, Carlise, Emmett, Rose, Michael, Angela, and Charlie are the supporting characters in this tale and I find I don't miss or even notice the absence of all the canon characters. No one is the bad guy, no one is the good guy in this story-- shades of gray mix with the different colored rooms of the Cullen home.

Curseward is passion. He is love and he is hate. It's hard to find an interpretation of Edward Cullen that I think embodies his vampire love and unwavering dedication in human form as well as this Edward.

"Despite the fact he had seemingly dedicated his life to tormenting her with his own strange brand of intensity, he had always been her closest friend. Her only friend, actually, besides Emmett. Living in such an isolated world, she had turned to Edward out of sheer desperation when the loneliness grew too great to bear. There had been moments of extreme irony in which she would vent to him about his sins. Rather than react defensively, he would consider her words and provide sage advice as though they were discussing a third party."

"Tell me to mind my own business," he would extol as they lay in the grass beneath a willow tree, the summer sun burning Bella's bare feet pink. "Tell me that I'm a moody prick, and that I shouldn't treat someone I worship like that."

He had rolled onto his side, the light making his eyes almost frighteningly green. "Tell me to not be with other girls." Frown deepening. "Tell me to quit fighting this." His eyes had dropped to her mouth. "Tell yourself while you're at it."

The twists and turns and the fate of these two always make me crazy and happy. There is always a roller coaster when I read this story. If you haven't read The Blessing and the Curse, you definitely should. It's a Twilight Fanfiction Classic.

Firefly in Summer by primarycolors

"Edward finds himself back in the little beach town of his childhood when he inherits the local bar from his uncle. The elusive, pretty girl next door has killer legs, a sketchbook and secrets that are slowly eating her alive."

I feel like everyone else in the world knew how amazing this story was and I am late to the party, per usual. However, if you are a fan already (leave comments about the last chapter!) or have never heard of it (start it now!) this story has become my current obsession.

It is nothing like I thought it was going to be--nothing.

I can't say too much about it without giving the plot twists away but it starts with a death in the extended family that brings Edward back to his childhood summer home. He meets a shy Bella and then all kinds of stuff happens that makes you want this story to never end.

The Emotional Education Of Edward Cullen by Picklewinkle

"Edward Cullen is brilliant and complicated but also closed off and socially inept. Can Bella teach him how to tap into and understand his emotions through an unorthodox experiment without breaking her own heart in the process?"

I've have rec'd this one before but it recently had a plot development that made me take notice and want to share it's awkward but adorableness.

I think I once said you want to junk-punch this Edward but then ruffle his hair and tell him you'll rub the pain away...a lot.

The summary does a much better job of describing the plot than I can.

A great little gem.

This story has one of my favorite Edwards ever.

He is a Poorward and his first impression is nothing like who he really is and her Bella is amazing as well.

Lillybellis makes magic in this story.

I fan-girl over this story hard.

It's short a chapter and a possible epilogue.

Dear Rob,

It’s your birthday…well birthday week and it’s time for me to make wishes for you so here goes:

1. I wish for you to come out with a rap album. You, Tom, Sam, Bobby and Marcus should create a group, grab the guitar and do a rap acoustic group. Genius? I know. You can call yourselves the 5LiveCrew. It rhymes and it makes sense. Think about it and let’s get started.

2. I wish for you to get rid of the long hair you don’t like having (which I just heard about in an interview). I’m completely down for you cutting your hair. Sell the pieces online (people will buy it believe it or not) and have the money donated to a charity for elephants, or one of your choice. Bonus, can I have a lock of your hair? I’m kidding. That’s creepy.

3. I wish for you to make music. Yes, you’ll have the 5LiveCrew group but also, I need to see you in a pub, playing songs you’ve written and making me clutch my heart and swooning as I try to contain my excitement and not jump up and down like an NSYNC fan girl. This needs to happen soon. I’m tired of waiting (said in the sweetest way possible).

4. I wish for you to be known as Robert Pattinson the actor, not Twilight Heartthrob, Edward Cullen or anything that has to do with the Twilight series because…well, you’re more than that and not an actual vampire.

5. Lastly, I wish for you to keep making movies that are out of the box. I wish for you not to changed, to keep being your cute adorkable, giggly self. And please, please, please wear glasses more often. They really sorta look good on you.

after two/three weeks of reading.

I think I may have fallen for MafiaWard.

What is it about him???

He's strong.

He's handsome.

He's cool one minute, and fighting the next.

He's got such a sweet side.

He's a mimbo.

Committed To Memory by krismom

" 'Til death do us part wasn't supposed to come before Happily ever after. Bella is a widow undone by grief and anger, learning about the contingencies of life from an unlikely source."

Krismom knows how to write sad and wise characters. She takes her time with a story without making you feel like you're waiting for something to happen because it all reveals itself in time. Bella and Edward's "relationship" is a slow burn but you don't mind because there are a million other things more important in this story and you care about them all. Read with kleenex.

Under the Boardwalk by Robicorn

"With the summer brings new people, and with the fall, an empty space they once were. See what happens when Bella meets Edward and one harmless lie turns their world upside down. Taboo/Teacher student. lemons. Be warned."

There have been a few teacher-student fics written and by a few, I mean tons, but this one actually appeals to me whereas the others haven't in the past. I think it's the details in the story and the support characters that make the story rich and different. The shizznit just got real and the inevitable heart-fail is about to happen...I'm scared for Edward.

"A ridiculous tale of accidental misdemeanors, felonies, past affairs and six kids on the run from life. Not necessarily realistic, but AH anyway. " (adifferentforest.com only)

Alice Not Alice is my favorite part of this story. The gang consists of Jasper, Em, Edward, and Bella. The trip consists of no plan, gas stations, and picking up random girls. Enter Alice Not Alice who can't speak English other than the word Jasper, which she uses for everything to great effect. Then the gang picks up Rose, a stripper with a heart of gold and fists of steel. It's a hoot and a holler of a story. Oh, yeah and Edward and Bella used to do it and now they're all hatey with each other.

Four Summers by Bratty-Vamp

I think my undying lurve of BrattyVamp is pretty clear.
